The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to work with communities devastated by the recent Tsunami disaster. The project is based in the state of Tamil Nadu, India and you will be working in villages along the coast south of Chennai. This program will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of India, while gaining first-hand knowledge about the country and its culture; an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
The devastation
along India's coast has been huge, with the death toll not officially clear. The
Global Volunteer Network is partnering with local NGO's to provide help for
those who need it the most. The project will focus on recovery, rebuilding and
long term development for the victims of the tragedy. There is a one month
minimum set for the program. The program starts on the first of the month so you
will need to arrive in Chennai before this date. You will be placed where your
skills are most suited and you will have the opportunity to look at the
available options at training and make a final decision with the partner. Due to
the nature of the situation, projects will start and end at different times so
there can be no specific guidelines as to what project you will work in until
you arrive. An orientation and training will take place upon arrival and you
will be placed according to the current needs and requirements with
consideration of your skills and background.
The partner program that we work with is a new organization and this specific
project was initially set up due to the impact of the tsunami on the local
communities. The program has now moved towards more long term projects working
in the areas of poverty elimination and community development. Although not
direct results of the tsunami, improvements in these areas are much needed. In
some ways, particularly in urban settings, India is fast developing, but there
are many small community groups struggling on a day to day basis to provide
adequate food for their families as well as providing their children with a
basic education or health care. This program aims to meet communities where they
have needs, needs that in many cases were serious concerns even prior to the
tsunami.
And this is the other option, and more volunteers are needed go to there link and volunteer

A marriage of Eastern and Western cultures in
a paradise-like setting, the Philippines has been described as the best-kept
secret of the Orient. Azure seas cradle its seven thousand islands; a hundred
cultures spawn its hundred tongues. The country is full of contrasts; a study of
western style democracy and iron-fisted regimes; peopled by men and women of
deep piety in the midst of liberalism; land-marked by skyscrapers beside old
stone churches and walled cities; a place where one finds in its lakes the
smallest commercial fish and in its seas the largest fish in the world; an
environment where both the earth's biggest raptor - the Philippine
(monkey-eating) eagle - and the smallest primate - the tarsier live. Every
visitor gets to taste and experience the world in a day in the Philippines.
The Global Volunteer Network's partner organisation in the Philippines is a
newly established NGO, composed of youthful national leaders, professionals, and
volunteers. Their objective is to assist and develop local Filipino communities
through environmentalism, education, integration, research and volunteerism.
Their programs are nationwide, assisting local communities with their basic
needs, focusing on children and the environment.
The volunteer opportunities are in the following areas:
Environmental Programs
Mangrove Reforestation: Help rebuilding the depleted fish stocks caused
by mangrove deforestation and destructive fishing practices, by helping with
reforestation, seedlings preparation, community education and other related
activities.
Rehabilitation of the Sierra Madre Range: Due to deforestation and the
resulting lack of tree cover, landslides killed hundreds after recent typhoons.
Volunteers in this program will plant trees for at least four hours a day, and
also participate in the area's environment education campaigns and community
activities.
Pasig River Rehabilitation Advocacy: Every last Sunday of February, the
country's National Capital Region hosts its only internationally-sanctioned
marathon, significant because it embraces environmental advocacy for the
rehabilitation of the Philippine's most historic and important waterway, the
Pasig River. Volunteers are needed for community campaigns and marathon
administration for months before the race, and on race day itself volunteers are
needed to help as support staff.
Teaching Programs
Day Care Centres: Volunteers teach children ages 3 to 5 in a day care
centre for 2 to 4 hours a day. They will teach children the alphabet and basic
concepts like colours, shapes, sizes, days of the week, and the like through
songs, stories and play. This program is not available during April and May.
Elementary and High School : Volunteers on the program teach elementary
and high school students in public schools for two to four hours a day. Subjects
taught include English, maths, science, health, and basic computer skills (only
in schools where computers are available). Volunteers may teach on their own but
there will be a local teacher available to assist. This program is not available
during April and May.
Health Program
Philippine laws provide for a community health centre in each of its 41,000
barangays (communities). Sadly, not all communities have their own health
centres and those that have one are woefully under-equipped and understaffed.
Medically-trained volunteers may help in community health centres and hospitals,
and may perform medical tasks depending on their skills and qualifications. They
may also conduct trainings and workshops to train the people on hygiene, health
care, reproductive health care, first-aid, and other health concerns. Volunteers
may also help set up clinics in public schools and train teachers and students
to become effective health officers and clinic custodians.
Cultural Exchange
Volunteers live with a Filipino family. This is a good opportunity for
volunteers to learn about Filipino culture, lifestyle, language and people. We
can arrange home stays in many parts of the Philippines. During this period
volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in local festivals.
Thank you Lord
